About Dr. Zanelli

PHYSICIAN:

Gaetano (Guy) Zanelli received his Doctor of Medicine degree with highest honors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology. He has been in Dermatology practice in the Bay Area since 1995.

Board Certification: American Board of Dermatology, 1995, re-certification: 2006.

Medical School: University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, 1986-1990 (graduation with highest Honors).

Internal Medicine Internship: University of California, San Francisco, 1990-1991.

Melanoma Fellowship: University of California, San Francisco, 1991-1992.

Dermatology Residency (appointed Chief Resident): Thomas Jefferson University 1992-1995.

In addition to being a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Zanelli is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery. He holds a teaching appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, where his activities include teaching diagnosis and treatment of skin disease to residents and medical students. He recently served as the Bay Area California State Chariman for the Dermatology Foundation Leaders’ Society.

Before finishing medical school Dr. Zanelli returned to San Francisco to do clinical research at the University of California’s Department of Dermatology at San Francisco General Hospital. During that time he organized and participated in the first trials of laser treatment for Kaposi’s Sarcoma, and this work was subsequently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Zanelli has presented clinical research work at meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and has authored a book chapter on the dermatologic manifestations of mycobacterial infections.

CONCERT PIANIST & ARTIST:

In addition to his medical work, Dr. Zanelli received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in music, specifically piano performance, and studied with some of the great master teachers, including John Perry, Thomas Richner and Aube Tzerko. His recital work as a Concert Pianist has taken him from Carnegie Hall to the opening ceremonies of the XXIIIrd Olympics at Los Angeles, and he has performed in Masterclasses with Leon Fleisher, Garrick Ohlsson and Aube Tzerko. Many of his summers before medical school were spent studying and participating at the Aspen Music Festival. He specializes in the music of the German and late Romantic composers, such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff and is also an avid chamber musician.
Dr. Zanelli’s photographic images of Italy, the so-called Bell’Italia Series, have won wide acclaim.
